BenQ intros "world's slimmest" 8-megapixel camera, the T850

BenQ intros "world's slimmest" 8-megapixel camera, the T850

BenQ has never been one to shy away from laying claim to world's thinnest / smallest titles, and it's done so yet again with its new T850 camera, despite the fact that it's seemingly identical in size to the company's previous T800 model. New this time around, however, is an increasingly-common smile-catching feature, as well as a 'swipe' gesture interface, which BenQ claims is unique among touch screen cameras. Otherwise you'll get the same 8-megapixels, 3x optical zoom, and 3-inch display as before, as well as the usual anti-shake and face-tracking features. No word on a price just yet, but you'll apparently be able to get this one in your choice of black or red when it launches in the (presumably) not too distant future.

K-Touch's 8 megapixel C280 cameraphone flaunts Canon image processing

K-Touch's 8 megapixel C280 cameraphone flaunts Canon image processing

Remember when Samsung was pumping out cameraphones with increasingly ridiculous megapixel counts? At the moment, phones top-out at about 5 megapixels. Until this, the 8 megapixel C280 with 3x optical zoom and claimed 1600 ISO support (right) from the previously unheard of K-Touch. Ironically, it might very well be using a CMOS sensor from Samsung. Perhaps more interesting though is the fact that it'll be using Canon's own DIGIC III image processing when it hits the Chinese market.

Panasonic HDC-HS9

Panasonic HDC-HS9

Panasonic HDC-HS9

Hi-def camcorders are shrinking so rapidly, they make singer Amy Winehouse seem positively plump. A great example is the new Panasonic HDC-HS9, a combination 60GB hard disk drive, SDHC AVCHD home video maker that weighs 15.8 ounces including the battery. In fact, it’s barely bigger than your palm. This is an amazing technological feat—up to 7 hours and 40 minutes of real-time Full HD recording in a package measuring 3 x 2.9 x 5 (WHD, in inches). Small and compact is all well and good but how did this new camcorder perform against some decidedly bigger competition?

Sony HDR-SR12

Sony HDR-SR12

Sony HDR-SR12

The popularity of hard disk drive standard definition and high-def camcorders continues to climb. Nothing beats the storage capability of a HDD video maker—just think, you can record hour after hour of baby giggles, if that’s your thing (and new parents, you can admit it). Hard drive cams are great for everyone else too since you can record anything to your heart’s content for much longer than any tape or disk-based system. And nothing beats the instantly generated thumbnails that let you hop from scene to scene during playback. Sony dominates the HDD market for SD and HD video makers—just as they do every other camcorder format. That said we were happy to get our hands on the new HDR-SR12, the company’s top-of-the-line HDD model that records Full HD 1920 x 1080I video along with 10-megapixel digital stills to a hefty 120GB hard drive. The camcorder even has Face Detection, the digicam feature du jour that works for video and stills. Even though there were no toddlers in the house, we definitely wanted to start recording ASAP…

Pentax kicks out the waterproof Optio W60

Pentax kicks out the waterproof Optio W60

Pentax has been cranking out waterproof Optio point-and-shoots for a while now, and the company's latest, the W60, doesn't really break from the company's successful basic formula. The 10 megapixel shooter packs a 2.5-inch LCD, 5x optical zoom that doesn't ever extend out from the main camera body, 720p movie mode, ISO 6400 sensitivity and face, smile, and blink detection. Oh, and it works in depths up to 13 feet in temperatures of just 14 degrees Fahrenheit, and is JIS Class 5 certified against dust and sand. You know, just in case. Should be out in July for $329 in both blue and silver.

Latest technologies: With a thickness of only 19.8 mm, the FinePix Z200fd is packed in all the latest technologies, including the intelligent red-eye removal, a 5x Fujinon optical zoom lens and the Dual Image Stabilization.

Stylish and attractive: The FinePix Z200fd is a very stylish and attractive camera that comes in four striking colors- a black and red combination, pink, silver and black. Its unique lens that slides diagonally, makes it look good along with the dazzling ‘Z' logo which illuminates as the camera is switched on. You can even carry this handy camera in your jeans pocket too as it is quite slim and fits easily in any handbag.

Real Photo Technology: To make you waste less shots and to set the highest possible standards for overall image quality the FinePix Z200fd is equipped with real photo technology.

Social camera: The FinePix Z200fd can be termed as the perfect social camera too as it features a Blog mode. This mode resizes images for easy upload to social networking sites such as Facebook™. Its Auction mode combines up to four photos in one frame – ideal for eBay™ users. Moreover, it allows consumers to share photos from one IrSimple™ device to another.

Battery charger BC-45

AC power adapter AC-5VZ10 (includes DC coupler CP-45)

Thus, you can see how the FinePix Z200fd will prove to be a good companion to you, and if you are getting crazy to get one. Then just wait for a little longer as the FinePix Z200fd is going to be available in the shops by the end of May. If still you cannot resist yourself from knowing more about it, then simply log on to www.fujifilm.co.uk or call 0870 084 1310.

Vivitar DVR565HD Digital Camcorder

Vivitar DVR565HD Digital Camcorder

Vivitar DVR565HD Digital Video Recorder (Images courtesy Target)

I’ve been passively looking for a cheap digital video camera for posting the occasional YouTube video. The JVC Everio S Series I wrote about yesterday is tempting, but I think it’s a bit too large to carry around on a daily basis, and I’d prefer something a bit cheaper. The Flip camcorders have also been near the top of my list, but they might have just been replaced with the latest Vivitar model that has finally popped up on Target’s website. The DVR565HD is capable of recording 30fps 720P ‘HD’ videos in MPEG4 or H.264 directly to an SD card. (Up to 4GB cards are supported.) It’s also apparently able to play 1080i videos and can connect directly to an HDTV with an included HDMI cable. Not too shabby.

Even though it won’t be available for a few more weeks, Target currently has it listed on their site for just $129.99, which makes it all the more tempting.

The Pentax K20D review

The Pentax K20D review

The Pentax K20D review

I don’t really hear much of this camera brand since most of my friends use Nikon or Canon. However, the The Pentax K20D kinda sounds cool and its a 14.6 megapixel digital SLR. Sure having more megapixels does not make a picture nicer but hey, its just specs in the end that consumers love and loathe. I’d write my own review if I can find a demo unit. Unit weighs: 25.2 oz.

‘The K20D finds itself in an uncomfortable position, looking pricey compared to mid-range DSLRs and not quite tough or fast enough to be considered a true semi-pro model. An unremarkable screen and restricted Live View system add further insult to injury.

But one look at the K20D’s images and you know you’re dealing with something special. It really does capture a great deal of detail and unlike Sony’s 14 Megapixel sensor and processing engine, this detail remains at higher sensitivities. And like the K10D before it, the decent viewfinder, comfortable grip, innovative exposure modes, twin control dials and vast degree of customisation makes it a great camera to use in traditional photographic terms.

Canon's PowerShot SD1100 IS gets reviewed

Canon's PowerShot SD1100 IS gets reviewed

Like pretty much every other Digital ELPH preceding it, Canon's flagship SD1100 IS garnered nothing but the utmost praise in a recent Imaging-Resource review. Okay, so maybe critics did kvetch about slight noise at ISO 800, a somewhat confusing interface, and a not-particularly-useful digital zoom, but this point-and-shoot managed to get it right in the areas that matter most. Build quality and design were both smiled upon, the image stabilization performed as advertised and the image quality was deemed 'excellent.' Of note, they did find very minor chromatic aberration in the wide angle shots, but considering the size of this shooter, results were seen as fantastic. Overall, it looks like Canon has produced yet another winner in the pocket-friendly camera department, but feel free to take a gander at the in-depth review waiting in the read link below.

Review: Olympus E-420 is One Smokin' SLR

Review: Olympus E-420 is One Smokin' SLR: "

Olympus_e420_028

Let's get one thing out of the way: Even though it's called the 420, Olympus' latest camera has absolutely nothing to do with illicit drug use. We tried to find a secret compartment for storing your stash: No dice.

In fact, the Olympus Evolt E-420 doesn't have much room for stashing anything. It's the most diminutive digital SLR we've seen — and that's a good thing. Most SLRs are bulky, heavyweight beasts tipping the scales at two pounds or more. The E-420 is more of a bantamweight, weighing in at just 1.4 pounds with the included kit lens.

Olympus_e420_009
That included lens continues Olympus' trend of bundling inexpensive, lightweight, versatile optics with its SLR kits. This piece of glass is a 14-42mm, F3.5-5.6 zoom lens that goes from an unusually wide-angle film equivalent of 28mm to a reasonably telephoto 84mm equivalent.

The camera's 10-megapixel sensor holds its own against other entry-level SLRs, and offers the full complement of image quality, exposure, autofocus and other settings that photo geeks expect from an SLR. Like other recent Olympus cameras, it's even got a 'live view' feature so you can compose shots on the LCD instead of the viewfinder.

But while we like the E-420's size, we're a little disappointed that it isn't even smaller. With Olympus' forthcoming ultra-compact 25mm, f2.8 Zuiko Digital lens, the E-420 comes close to being the ideal weapon for a photojournalist — a compact, high-megapixel camera with a low profile and a fleet footed lens.

But it's not quite there yet: At 3.5 inches from the front of the 25mm lens to the back of the viewfinder, the E-420 is still too bulky to fit unobtrusively in a jacket pocket. But it's definitely a step in the right direction. We're looking forward to the next next version in the series, even if it Olympus forgets to add that secret stash compartment.' —Dylan Tweney

WIRED Light weight and small size make it far more portable than most DSLRs. Live view lets you compose on-screen instead of peering through the viewfinder. Speedy autofocus. No discernible shutter lag. Paging all photo geeks: RAW format support.

TIRED Fewer buttons means it takes more menu-surfing to adjust basic settings like ISO and white balance. Face-detection feature can be slow. Four Thirds lens compatibility is largely moot, as no manufacturers beside Olympus and pricey Sigma support the standard. No pop-up bong attachment.

$600 with 14-42mm kit lens, olympusamerica.com

7 out of 10

(Photos by Jim Merithew for Wired.com)

Olympus_e420

Feature-wise, the E-420 holds its own against other low-cost SLRs. The
10 megapixel sensor produces good quality images with little noise up
to and including ISO 800 (it maxes out at ISO 1600).

The camera is fast, squeezing off shots with no shutter lag, just as
you'd expect from an SLR. Like other recent Olympus cameras, such as
the E-510, it has a 'live view' mode, which lets you compose shots on
the LCD instead of peering through the viewfinder as you must do with
most SLRs.

The 2.7-inch LCD is bright and has a wider viewing angle than most
camera displays, but images update more slowly in live view mode than
they do on most point-and-shoot cameras, making this mode more suitable
to slow-moving targets than fast-moving ones.

The E-420 sports a variety of autofocus modes including one that
automatically detects faces in the frame and focuses on them. That
feature worked well in our tests but sometimes took as much as a second
to locate a face. It also only works when the camera's live view mode
is switched on.

In addition to the kit lens, we also tested the E-420 with a very trim
$250 Zuiko Digital 25mm prime (fixed focal length) lens from Olympus
that drops the weight of the camera to a trim 1.2 pounds. The Zuiko
lens is just 1 inch from front to back -- much smaller than almost any
other digital camera lens on the market. Its focal length corresponds
to that of a 50mm lens on a standard 35mm film camera, which closely
corresponds to the viewing angle of the human eye, and is a popular
focal length for portraits and candid photography.

Unless you subscribe to the lens-size-correlates-with-penis-size theory
touted by many tourists, this compact lens's miniscule dimensions make
it quite appealing. It's especially good for unobtrusive 'run and gun'
photography: shooting street scenes, political demonstrations,
footraces, or crime scenes. Or, if you're less adventurous, it should
work pretty well at the family reunion picnic or the county fair.

The aperture of f2.8 is not as large as we'd like in a small prime lens
like this. One of the main reasons you'd use a fixed focal-length lens
is to get the larger aperture it affords, so we're disappointed that
this doesn't even offer f2.0, which would make it a true standout among
low-cost lenses for digital cameras.

Samsung NV40 point-and-shoot gets reviewed

Samsung NV40 point-and-shoot gets reviewed

Don't sweat it, we're not going to quiz you on the specs from Samsung's NV40 -- after all, this puppy was introduced way back in January of the year 2008. Nevertheless, the 10-megapixel shooter has finally arrived at PhotographyBLOG's labs for review, so let's dive right in. Simply put, the NV40 isn't a revolutionary step above the NV20, though that wasn't seen as necessarily bad. It was noted that the image stabilization worked quite well, but captures were still noticeably noisy even at ISO 200. The unit itself felt like a premium product, and the Smart Touch interface was highly praised, but reviewers just couldn't find a way to stomach the £199 ($385) price tag with such disappointing image results. Check out the full review for yourself before passing judgment, but it sounds like Sammy just barely missed the mark with this one.

Sony TG3E: world's smallest 1080i camcorder unboxed, sized-up with 720p champ

Sony TG3E: world's smallest 1080i camcorder unboxed, sized-up with 720p champ

Get a load of what just arrived at the doorstep of our European HQ -- the world's smallest 1080i camcorder, Sony's TG3E. Otherwise known as the TG1 in the US, this pup is small and sturdy and definitely looks the part of a Full HD (as it's defined for camcorders) 1080i shooter. Hell, Sony somehow managed to turn that boxy design into something sexy to hold. However, Sanyo's 720p Xacti DMX-HD700 (in red) still trumps the TG3E in size and weight. Unfortunately, it gives up significant lines of resolution in the process and uses inferior materials to boot. We'll be back later with a full review of this pup as soon as we find a nice, tropical island which can pamper this beast in the luxury a $900 camcorder deserves. So until then, check the gallery and call out in the comments with any questions you'd like us to tackle.
