Canon's Rebel XSi gets emphatically unboxed

Canon's Rebel XSi gets emphatically unboxed

Well, what do you know? The actual Rebel XSi comes packaged in a box that looks exactly like the one that cropped up earlier this month. Still, there's just something special about seeing Canon's latest DSLR cautiously unboxed, with the fortunate unboxer taking special care not to insert an obscene amount of blur into each snap. Sure, the model shown above was unboxed within a retail location, but that's not to say you can't hand over some cold hard cash to do the same at your abode. Check out the whole process in the read link below -- just brace yourself for some serious (albeit SFW) gadget affection in that first shot.

Pentax K200D

Pentax K200D

Pentax K200D

Pentax is the Rodney Dangerfield of camera companies—they just don’t get any respect. The fact they operate on a shoestring budget, have recently been taken over by lens-maker Hoya and have as much clout with your local mega-retailer as I do may have something to do with it. Many photographers made their bones with Pentax K series cameras (back in the film days) so there’s a bit of nostalgia for the brand. Most new shooters don’t know Pentax from Pampers. This is too bad because the company makes decent D-SLRs—forget their point-and-shoots since they’re light years behind Canon and Sony. With this sad tale on the counter, DigitalTrends was happy to receive Pentax’s new entry-level D-SLR, the 10.2-megapixel K200D which costs $799 USD with the basic 3x 18-55mm lens--about the going price for an introductory 2008 D-SLR. Yes you can get the older 8MP Canon Rebel XTi and 6MP Nikon D40 for less but why bother when you can a new one with higher resolution? And you know you won’t pay $799 USD—more like $725-- for this kit since Pentax doesn’t have the cachet of the new 12MP Canon XSi, 10MP Nikon D60 or recently reviewed Sony DSLR-A350 . Let’s see if this one gets a little respect or not…

Video: Hands-on Samsung's 10 megapixel / 720p NV24HD shooter

Samsung and pretty much everyone else is taking a long hard look at their clumsy UIs as consumer electronics continue to commodify. We've certainly seen that demonstrated with striking effect with the Samsung F480's unfortunately named TouchWiz interface. Now take a look at the UI for Samsung's NV24HD. Besides shooting 720p video, this 10.2 megapixel shooter with 24-mm ultra-wide angle lens features a series of touch-sensitive buttons surrounding a brilliant 2.5-inch AMOLED display. An interesting twist on the lifeless touch-screens we've seen on other cameras. However, it does so at the expense of screen size on a crowded back panel. Still, we're a bit smitten by the user experience which we quickly got the hang of. See for yourself in the video after the break.

No doubt, we liked Samsung's 10 megapixel NV24HD camera with 720p video. But we loves us some Panasonic DMC-FX500. It shoots 720p video and 10 megapixel stills just like its Korean competitor only with a 5x, 25-mm wide-angle Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens instead of the 24-mm 3.6x zoomer found on the Sammy. Oh, and it brings a bigger 3.0-inch touchscreen too. With the unit already making its way out the door in the US for about $400, we're just waiting to hear about the image quality before grabbing one for ourselves. Reviews please, somebody... Bueller? Video hands-on after the break.

RED shows off 5K EPIC camera

RED shows off 5K EPIC camera

RED is really going all out at NAB this year. In addition to that Scarlet 3K 'pocket' camera, the RED ONE is getting seriously one-upped by the new top-of-the-line RED EPIC. This 5K camera has a full-frame S35mm Mysterium X sensor, and pretty much matches 35mm film resolution -- RED ONE topped out at 4K. FPS is limited to 100, which is to be expected with all those pixels to handle, but other features match that of other RED cams. Of course, the promise of the RED ONE 'rendering obsolescence obsolete' has been slightly trampled by EPIC, but the good news is that RED will allow ONE customers to trade in their cameras for a full $17,500 credit towards the EPIC when it ships in 2009. Price? About $30,000.

Sigma DP1 Reviewed

Sigma DP1 Reviewed: "

sigma-dp1.jpgLuminous Landscape has posted a review of the strange and enticing Sigma DP1. The high-end compact camera promises a lot, from its large, DSLR sized Fovean image sensor to its fixed 28mm lens, it looked like being the stripped down, high-quality camera we have been wishing for.

The review, though, tells another story. A story of a camera which might have cut it circa 2002AD, but not today. No viewfinder, a maximum aperture of ƒ4 (pathetic for a fixed wide angle lens), a crappy LCD screen, no image stabilization, movies that are 'barely big enough for use on YouTube', some very curious software decisions (everything, including focus-point selection, is buried in a hard to navigate menu) and poor low-light (high ISO) performance. For a $900, this is scandalous.

But does it take a good picture? Apparently, yes:

The raw image quality of the Sigma DP1 is excellent – truly far and away superior to that of any digicam that I have yet seen or used.

Strong praise. The lens, too, is very good – something you would expect of a lens manufacturer. But are great pictures enough? If the camera is so hard to use, will it ever make it out of the camera bag? A single flaw can ruin a great camera. My Canon G9, for instance, takes great pictures and is stunningly easy to use. The tiny viewfinder and shutter lag make it useless for portraits, though. So useless I actually had to buy a DSLR. Maybe we should wait for the DP2. That way we might get a 2008 standard camera, although probably not until 2012.

RED unveils Scarlet mini camcorder

RED unveils Scarlet mini camcorder

RED just unleashed its promised Scarlet 'pocket professional' camera at NAB 2008, and it's certainly a sight to see. The teensy 3K resolution camcorder is based on a 2 / 3-inch Mysterium X sensor, can shoot at 1 to 120 FPS and records to dual CompactFlash cards, which can handle up to 100MB per second of REDCODE RAW HD video. You can preview your shot on the 4.8-inch LCD, and there's a 8x RED zoom lens included. HMDI, HD-SDI, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 inputs are built in, and the device is compatible with 'many' RED ONE accessories. WiFi control is also included. In typical RED fashion, the only promises about the final product is that 'specifications, delivery dates and design are subject to change... count on it,' but this is certainly a good start. No pre-orders are being accepted at this time, but the price is purportedly to going to be a bit under $3,000, and the release is slated for early 2009.

Sony's Alpha A350 DSLR gets reviewed

Sony's Alpha A350 DSLR gets reviewed

For some, tossing around phrases like 'live preview' and 'flip-out swivel screen' would be enough to sell Sony's Alpha A350, but we know you're more discerning than that, right? Right. Truth be told, Sony's feature-packed Alpha only turned out okay -- not great -- during a review session with the folks over at CNET. Still, the unit did offer a sturdy feel, a fantastically useful LCD monitor and satisfactory color / dynamic range. Unfortunately, the extra $200 or so you pay for 14-megapixels (over 10MP on the A300) wasn't deemed worthwhile, as the extra processing 'exacted a performance toll' in real-world use. The bottom line? These critics felt the Rebel XSi would be a better bet if you're just looking for a nice resolution bump, but for the vast majority of folks, you're likely better off snagging the A300 and putting your leftover dough towards a decent piece of glass.

AgfaPhoto's DV-5000Z SDHC camcorder shoots 720p

AgfaPhoto's DV-5000Z SDHC camcorder shoots 720p

Though not nearly as sexy (or well-spec'd, for that matter) as Sony's recently-unveiled HDR-TG1, AgfaPhoto's DV-5000Z still manages to hold its own on paper. Measuring in at 4.7- x 2.75-inches (12- x 7-centimeters) and weighing just over 7-ounces (200-grams), this HD camcorder features a 5-megapixel Micron CMOS sensor, 2.5-inch flip-out LCD, 3x optical zoom and an SD / SDHC slot to store everything on. As for shooting capabilities, it'll capture clips at 1,280 x 720 (using H.264 compression) and snag 16-bit stereo sound all the while. You'll also find USB connectivity, a rechargeable Li-ion and video out, natch. Unfortunately, there's no mention of this €249 ($393) device ever coming Stateside, but it'll be ready to roll in Russia later this month.

Canon Quietly Releases XL H1S and XL H1A, Lowers H1 Series Price [Camcorders]

Canon Quietly Releases XL H1S and XL H1A, Lowers H1 Series Price [Camcorders]

Today Canon has announced updates to their XL H1 1080i Pro HD camcorder, splitting the line into two offerings: the XL H1S and XL H1A, a more simplistic XL H1A will be offered at a retail price of just $5,999 this July—several thousand less that we saw the original XL H1 priced for. And the H1 classic XL H1S, available this June, will run $8,999.

Updates look to be disappointingly minor, with more studio output options, expanded image control, Speedlite shoe mount, and the ability to record external in XLR mics at the same time. The spec-similar 20X HD zoom lens has also seen an update for improved manual controls/ergonomics. But the biggest component, the three 1/3 inch, 1.67 Megapixel CCD Image Sensors along with Canon's proprietary DIGIC DVII HD Image Processor—seems to be a complete rehash of the XL H1—a camera that's now over two years old.

Oh, and the bonus for forking over $3,000 more for the XL H1S?

'The XL H1S model provides expanded connectivity by incorporating HD-SDI (SMPTE 299M)/SD-SDI (SMPTE272M) output with embedded audio and time code, providing a raw, uncompressed 1.485 Gbps signal for demanding live production environments, SMPTE Time Code input and output terminals, and a Genlock output terminal for multi-camera shooting situations.'

Pogue Reviews Casio's 1,200FPS EXIFILM Pro EX-F1 (Verdict: Built for Pure Speed) [Casio EXIFILM PRO EX-F1]

Pogue Reviews Casio's 1,200FPS EXIFILM Pro EX-F1 (Verdict: Built for Pure Speed) [Casio EXIFILM PRO EX-F1]

We pretty much flipped over the Casio EXIFILM PRO EX-F1's insane rapid fire mode when we get our hands on it: 60fps still shooting, and up to a retardiculous 1200fps video for super slo-mo. David Pogue gives the full review, and spends a page lauding how freakin' fast this camera is. Besides loving the sheer rate of fire, he really digs the pre-record mode, which constantly shoots while you're just halfway pressing the shutter, so even if you're too slow to hit just the right moment, the camera's already got it. But! 'Unfortunately, this highly unusual, almost experimental piece of equipment includes nearly as many downsides as breakthroughs.'

The low light performance sucks, courtesy of a tiny light sensor, which is half the size of a beginner's DSLR. So you need brilliant lighting to avoid dim or blurry shots. And Casio's solution of 'one of the brightest and fastest flashes ever on a consumer camera' ain't much of one, unless you're into harshly lit photos.

Topping that bit of suck off, the digital (not optical) eyepiece is crummy, and both start-up and focusing are sloooow. No zooming, during HD video capture either. And high-speed videos offer no sound or any setting changes mid-filming. But overall, Pogue says that those sniggles are 'like complaining that your 7-year-old violin virtuoso is lousy at sports' and that 'Casio deserves congratulations for innovating in so many big, bold, industry-defying ways.' Buy it for speed, not the other stuff.

Klegg Electronics Genesis V1803 Camcorder reviewed - not so great

Klegg Electronics Genesis V1803 Camcorder reviewed - not so great

This digital camcorder from Klegg is like the Swiss Army knife of digital camcorders. However much like the knife, it can do a lot of things, but isn’t particularly well versed at any one of them. This particular digital camcorder can record video, capture still images, play video games, read ebooks, play music, take voice notes, and can’t manage to do any of them spectacularly.

klegg-v1803-1

klegg-v1803-3

It has a 5.2 micron CMOS sensor which can be interpolated up to 11MP, 8x digital zoom, a 3’ screen, and 64MB of integrated memory. Then there is an SD/MMC card slot for expansion and you can record in VGA and QVGA at 30fps, then images can be captured at 3840x2880, 2592x1944, or 1600x1200.

klegg-v1803-4

klegg-v1803-5

File format support includes JPEG, AVI, WAV, and MP3, and you get a Mini USB 2.0 port, TV-in, TV-out, and an earphone jack. All that is packed into a 3.74x2.79x1.34-inch package, it comes with all the cables, a cloth bag, power cable, wrist strap, headphones, and a remote. The picture and video quality are sadly fairly abysmal, but it can play music, movies, and do some gaming on the go, all of which its 3-inch screen is pretty decent at, so, for the PMP functionality alone it is almost worth the $170 price, but for anything camera related your cell phone would probably do better.

Panasonic’s lightweight SDR-S7 camcorder announced

Panasonic’s lightweight SDR-S7 camcorder announced

Panasonic SDR-S7

Do people still buy standard definition video cameras? Panasonic seems to think so. The company has announced that its pocket-sized SDR-S7 will be arriving in Japan later this month. Weighing only 182grams with its battery and SD card, the camera can record 16:9 or 4:3 video at VGA (640 x 480) resolution in MPEG-2 format. The camcorder can shoot in three video modes: XP (10 Mbps), SP (5 Mbps), and LP (2.5 Mbps). Video recordings are stored via SD cards, with up to 16GB support—allowing up to 13 hours of recorded video in LP mode.' The featherweight SDR-S7 is equipped with a 2.7-inch widescreen display, 10x optical zoom, stereo microphone, 0.6 seconds Quick Start, and USB 2.0 for fast file transferring. Panasonic is touting the camcorder’s 3.8 seconds boot up time and battery life of 70 minutes. Unfortunately, no HD capability is included, which is a bummer. However, if you’re in the market for something entry-level, ultra portable, and compact the SDR-S7 should fit the bill. It even comes conveniently bundled with Panasonic’s MotionSD STUDIO 1.3 video editing software.

The Panasonic SDR-S7 measures 1.61 x 2.32 x 4.01-inches and will come in black or silver. The release date is April 25th in Japan for 44,800 Yen ($440). A US release is expected to follow in May.

Minox DC-8011 packs 8 megapixels into a yawner compact

Minox DC-8011 packs 8 megapixels into a yawner compact

If anything, Minox does a decent job of aping its big name counterparts in looks and feature set -- if only it wasn't on average a couple years late to the party. The Minox DC-8011 seems to be a perfectly passable budget compact, with an 8 megapixel CCD, 2.7-inch LCD and electric image stabilization. It even measures in at under an inch thick and offers 4x optical zoom, but that's about as exciting as things get here -- which is to say, not very exctign. No word on price or availability, but we're not really sure that's much of a loss.

Canon PowerShot SD790 IS reviewed, predictably great

Canon PowerShot SD790 IS reviewed, predictably great

Canon has the art of the compact digicam down to a science by now, and the PowerShot SD790 is no exception, according to PC Magazine. The new shooter nabbed the publication's Editors' Choice award for 'superior image quality' that pulled it ahead of the likes of Panasonic's DMC-FX55 and Sony's DSC-T2. The SD790 includes a new physical scroll wheel that took a bit of getting used to, but turned out to be a quicker way to skim through menus. The camera includes a new motion-detection feature to automatically switch ISO and exposure to keep the images sharp, and it worked as advertised. Other automatic settings have been tweaked for better images, and the camera performs notably well in high ISO shots. The flash isn't super powerful, and the reviewer would've preferred a wider angle lens at this $350 pricepoint, but all-in-all there seems to be plenty to love about this latest Digital Elph.

Lightning Review: Waterproof Shockproof Freezeproof Olympus Stylus 1030SW

Lightning Review: Waterproof Shockproof Freezeproof Olympus Stylus 1030SW

The Gadget: The Stylus 1030SW, Olympus' semi-indestructible 10.1MP point-and-shoot, is designed for fairly extreme conditions. Olympus claims the camera is shockproof (to 2 meters), waterproof (to 10 meters), freezeproof (to 14°F), and crushproof (to 220 lbs.) We've seen other cameras with features like this, but it's rare that they're all combined into one.

The Price: $400 retail, we've seen it as low as $340.

The Verdict: It's tougher than Glass Joe, but it's no Mike Tyson.

I tested the 1030SW under fairly rigorous conditions, and for the most part it stood up to the challenge. After dropping the camera to the ground from around six feet, it took pictures without any problem. Next was the underwater test. I didn't take it to the limit, but I did bring it with me in the tub. The camera works under water, and there are options designed for capturing images of sea life. The pictures didn't come out too well, but that could be my fault as it is likely designed to shoot fish in clear water and not sitting in a bathtub, taking pictures of my...er...feet.

Things got a little trickier during the freeze and crush tests. I left it in the freezer for about two hours, and when I took it out I had a 'Battery Empty' message. Worried that I damaged the camera, I let it thaw and it came back to full power after 10-15 minutes. For the crush test, I placed all 170+ pounds of myself on top of the camera. At first I heard a little unnerving crunch, and when I picked it up, I saw what looked like a crack in the LCD screen. However, after about 15 seconds, it went away and I was left with the same crack-free screen I had when I started.

As for the pictures, they came out well for the most part. In optimal conditions, they looked great. When I was under water, or in a dimly lit room the snapshots left a little something to be desired. I was able to correct some of the shots with the various exposure options, but it's still a point-and-shoot.

If you are going on an outdoor adventure and looking for a light, easy camera to take, this is a good bet. I wouldn't recommend pushing it to the advertised limits, but it's definitely sturdier than other cameras in its price range.

Canon Vixia HF10

Canon Vixia HF10

Canon Vixia HF10

We reported on the first wave of 2008 camcorders with our recent review of the very good JVC GZ-HD6. That hard disk drive 1080p video maker did a wonderful job recording accurate colors that really popped off the screen of our plasma HDTV. In keeping with the trend away from DVD- and tape-based models, the new Canon Vixia HF10 saves video to 16GB of internal flash memory as well as optional SDHC memory cards (up to 32GB, the current maximum for the format; it will handle even bigger sizes once they’re available). Given there’s not even a HDD—God forbid a tape or disc—to weigh it down, the Vixia HF10 is unbelievably small and compact. In fact it’s just a shade smaller than the Sony HDR-CX7, another high-def camcorder that only records to Memory Stick Pro Duo memory cards. You will be amazed at the size of the HF10. The fact this AVCHD edition records 1920 x 1080i video is pretty sweet too, an increase over last year’s 1440 x 1080i. Cute is good, but how does it work in the big, bad ugly world? We couldn’t wait to find out…
