Panasonic's DMC-FT1, TZ7, TZ6, FX550, and FX40 cameras outed by French authority

Panasonic's DMC-FT1, TZ7, TZ6, FX550, and FX40 cameras outed by French authority

We're not sure what's going in France at the moment but a bevy of new 12 megapixel Panasonic Lumix cameras have broken loose with or without corporate approval. Let's start with the rugged €399 DMC-FT1 (pictured). It features a 12 megapixel (1/2.33-inches) with a 28-128mm optically stabilized 4.6x zoom Leica lens and a 2.7-inch LCD. It'll survive drops of up to 1.5 meters, water to a depth of 3 meters, while surviving storage in the dustiest of apartments. It'll even shoot 720p video in 'AVCHD Lite' format... whatever that is. Next up are the €429 DMC-TZ7 and its £329 DMC-TZ6 little buddy. The TZ7 couples a 12x optically stabilized zoom (25-300mm) with the ability to shoot 720p HD video in that same AVCHD Lite format and reviewable on a biggie (but relatively common) 3-inch LCD.

Also outed is the €299 FX550 with 5x zoom, 720p video capture, and a 3-inch touchscreen buzzing along with haptic feedback. It'll even handle aperture and shutter priority modes in addition to manual exposure for those who wish to push their amateur credentials to the edge. The €299 DMC-FX40 dials things back with a skinnier chassis and smaller 2.5-inch LCD while ditching the manual stuff. Check 'em all in the gallery.

Panasonic reveals new LUMIX bounty prior to PMA

Panasonic reveals new LUMIX bounty prior to PMA

Ah, the sweet smell of PMA. While the camera-filled trade show is still over a month away, Panasonic's not wasting any time in outing its new LUMIX lineup -- which we already saw with Euro model names earlier today. Up first is the ZS-series, which contains the 10.1 megapixel DMC-ZS3 ($399.95) and DMC-ZS1 ($299.95), both of which boast a 25mm ultra-wide angle lens and a 12x optical zoom. The ZS3 is marked as the planet's first digicam to feature HD video recording in AVCHD Lite (a subset of AVCHD restricted to 720p, yuck), and the twin CPU Venus Engine HD provides the power to handle it. Next is the DMC-FX580 ($399.95), a compact 12.1 megapixel shooter with a 5x optical zoom and a swank touchscreen on the rear. For the argonauts in attendance, there's the DMC-TS1 ($399.95), a rough and rugged 12.1 megapixeler with AVCHD Lite capturing abilities (guess it's numero dos?), a 4.6x optical zoom and a waterproof / shockproof chassis.

15.2 megapixel Sony Alpha A800 DSLR rumored

15.2 megapixel Sony Alpha A800 DSLR rumored

At this point, it's remarkably tough to say how legitimate these claims are, and while we'd wholeheartedly recommend digesting these details with a dose of NaCl, we'd be shortchanging you to not pass 'em on. According to a curious post over at Photofan.jp, Sony is readying an Alpha A800 DSLR (mockup pictured) with a 15.2 megapixel sensor, an ISO range of 200 to 12,800, a new high-speed sync flash, 23 total AF sensors, a fresh metering / AF sensor tracking system and inbuilt WiFi. We're told that the camera will be officially unveiled at PMA 2009 alongside a trio of new lenses -- thankfully, March (and our answer) is less than two months out.

Sanyo announced a plethora of 'dual camera' models (camcorders with still capture aspirations) just yesterday, and Geek.com's Chris Gampat was lucky enough to get a little hands on time with the lot, choosing three favorites: the VPC-FH1, VPC-HD2000, and VPC-WH1. The first two are similar in terms of specs, both capturing 1080p video at 60fps and 8 megapixel stills at 12fps through a 10x optical zoom. They differ only in form factor, the VPC-FH1 offering a traditional style and the VPC-HD2000 coming with a pistol grip. Then there's the more daring VPCP-WH1, waterproof down to 10 feet and coming in a 'look at me, sailor' yellow, but only shooting 720p video at 30fps and 2 megapixel stills. However, its 30x optical zoom is perfect for spotting Piping Plovers, and the 3.5 hour battery life means this thing can probably survive longer underwater than you. Videos of these three are below, and surely one them fits your lifestyle, so make a little room this spring, won't you?

Olympus E-30 DSLR reviewed: distinctly different, but that's a good thing

Olympus' E-30 just recently began to hit store shelves after being announced last November, and the shutterbugs at DigitalCameraReview have taken the liberty of critiquing it for all prospective buyers to see. The cam maintained the quirkiness that tends make an Olympus, well, an Olympus, but when it came down to actual performance, the DSLR didn't disappoint... much, anyway. It should be noted that it couldn't hold a candle to the D90 at ISO 3,200, so low-light fiends may want to look elsewhere. That aside, critics were more than pleased with the copious amount of features, the top-shelf focusing speed and the remarkable build quality. If it were priced a few hundies lower, it'd almost be a no-brainer, but with an asking price of around $1,300 at present time, it'll be hard to sway the eyes of those already focusing on another shooter. Have a look at the read link for a few sample shot comparisons and the full writeup.

Sanyo's 2009 HD Xacti camcorder lineup brings a trio of world's firsts

Engadget Japanese is attending a Sanyo presser where its much loved Xacti camcorders are being overhauled. The 5-strong mix of pistol-grip and new, horizontally-oriented camcorders includes several world's firsts according to Sanyo: the world's first to shoot progressive, Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 video at 60fps (models DMX-HD2000/FH11 pictured above), the world's first waterproof HD cameras (DMX-CA9 and DMX-WH1 with 30x optical zoom), and world's first HD camera to shoot 10 megapixel still images (DMX-CG10). All the cams shoot in MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format for broad compatibility with devices and video editing software. The DMX-HD2000 will hit the streets first on February 6 with the rest to trickle out before April is up. No prices were announced but we expect these to be competitive, as always. The rest of the new models pictured after the break with full specifications just beyond the read link.

Panasonic's Lumix DMC-FX150 reviewed, perfect for higher-end casual photographers

If you've been waiting for SLR quality pics out of a camera you can slip into your pocket (and we're not talking cargo pants here), Panasonic's 14 megapixel Lumix DMC-FX150 is sadly not your product. However, if you've been looking for something that can take shots approaching the quality of something like a Canon G10 but do so in a more slender form factor, keep reading. PhotographyBLOG's review of this higher-end of the point 'n shoot range finds it to be quite good, capturing great images in bright light with very few chromatic aberrations. However, darker shots (bane of the pocket cam market) are still somewhat problematic, as the built-in optical IS fails to keep images sharp and noise appears at ISO 800 and above. Despite those annoyances the $399 camera (yours for about $100 less if you don't mind bargain hunting) scored overall high marks, becoming one of the best quality shooters you can buy and have a hope of fitting in your skinny jeans.

Nikon D3x reviewed: unmatched image quality, steep price tag

While all of the Nikon D3x previews from December largely heaped praise on the camera, Thomas Hogan's recent review is decidedly more evenhanded. Though lauded for what he calls the best image quality of any DSLR on the market, its $8000 price tag receives some harsh criticism. Compared to its D3 predecessor, he says you're paying a $3600 premium for what is essentially just twice the pixel count (12.1 megapixels vs. 24.4). If you're the kind of person who needs the higher resolution, this is the camera for you. For everyone else, it might be worth a pass. Hit up the read link for an exhaustive analysis.

Samsung intros SL102 / SL420 point-and-shoots, no one noticesSamsung has already thrown most of its excitement out here at CES, and after looking at the SL102 and SL420, you might argue that 'most' should actually be 'all.' New PoGo Instant Digital Camera Still No Instamatic, But Cool Enough [Ces 2009]

New PoGo Instant Digital Camera Still No Instamatic, But Cool Enough [Ces 2009]

No matter what they do, the new Polaroid PoGo Instant digicam will never have the magic nature, heartwarming charm, and craptastic retro quality of their good old Instamatics. But they are kind of cool, anyway.

Sure, the new Polaroid PoGo Instant Digital Camera can print 2 x 3-inch photos in 60 seconds. That's moreless what it took for the Instamatic images to appear. And like the Instamatic, the PoGo doesn't use ink for the images, and can print with and without 'fun' borders in sticky-backed paper. It's also smaller than the Instamatic, at 10 ounces and 4.7 inches wide by 3 inches tall. And you can review the images before printing them out.

OK, so it's more convenient and probably has better quality. But still, no analog charm (hopefully, they will add an Instamatic filter mode at one point).

Polaroid Introduces the Polaroid PoGo™ Instant Digital Camera

Digital version of the company's iconic instant camera

LAS VEGAS (January 8, 2009) – Today Polaroid announces the launch of the Polaroid PoGo™ Instant Digital Camera, the first digital camera and instant printer combination available in the US and Europe that is portable enough to take anywhere. With the push of a button, consumers can select from among the digital photos on the camera, crop or edit them and in less than 60 seconds, print full-color, 2x3-inch prints - all with a single device.

'This is the digital version of our traditional instant camera, which consumers have loved since the 70s,' says Jon Pollock, vice president and general manager, Digital Imaging. 'With this product, Polaroid will bring the magic of instant photography to a whole new generation. It's what consumers have told us they want – a fun, easy way to use a digital camera to print photos and share their memories instantly.'

The Polaroid PoGo™ Instant Digital Camera is the second product in the Polaroid PoGo™ family of products. Like the Polaroid PoGo™ Instant Mobile Printer, which hit store shelves in July 2008, the Polaroid PoGo™ Instant Digital Camera uses the same ZINK Paper™ and ZINK™ Zero Ink™ Printing Technology from ZINK Imaging. ZINK is an ink-free printing technology which replaces ink cartridges or ribbons with ZINK Paper™ - a composite material that has embedded, heat-activated dye crystals. Before printing, ZINK Paper appears white like regular photo paper. Once the pictures are printed, they are immediately dry to the touch, durable and smudge and water resistant.

The Polaroid PoGo™ Instant Digital Camera offers a full-feature digital camera with 100 percent inkless printing, 2x3-inch sticky-backed photos with or without fun borders and the advantage of reviewing the captured photos on a three-inch color LCD screen before printing. The instant digital camera measures 4.7-inches wide by 3-inches tall and weighs only 10 ounces.

'Unlike traditional instant film, photos from the Polaroid PoGo™ Instant Digital Camera emerge fully developed,' Pollock says. 'While many of our most passionate customers tell us 'shaking' a Polaroid photo is part of the fun, with any Polaroid photo, the 'shake' is totally optional.'

The Polaroid PoGo™ Instant Digital Camera will be available beginning in March 2009 at major retailers for a suggested retail price of $199. Ten-packs of ZINK Photo Paper™, which can be used in both the Instant Digital Camera and the Instant Mobile Printer, retail for $4.99 and 30-packs for $12.99, and widely available at national retailers everywhere.

Casio Announces High-Speed Pocket Digital Cameras

Casio Announces High-Speed Pocket Digital Cameras

Casio Exilim EX-FS10 & EX-FC100 Digital CamerasIt looks like some of the high-speed capture technology from Casio’s award-winning Exilim EX-F1 and Exilim EX-FH20 is starting to trickle down into Casio’s pocket digital cameras. Today at CES, Casio announced the Exilim EX-FS10 and EX-FC100. Thanks to Casio’s new Exilim Engine 4.0, both cameras have a high-speed 30 shot-per-second burst rate as well as a high-speed movie mode that can capture video at up to 1000 frames-per-second.

The 9.1-megapixel Casio Exilim EX-FS10 is a ‘card-sized’ digital camera. It’s only about half an inch thick (0.64 inches) and at 3.8 inches long and 2.3 inches high, it’s just slightly larger than a business card. The EX-FS10 has a 3x internally zooming lens and a 2.5 LCD display.

Casio Exilim EX-FS10 Digital Camera

The Exilim EX-FC100 is slightly larger than the FS10. It’s close to an inch thick and a tenth of an inch longer. It has a 5x optical zoom lens, a 9.1-megapixel image-stabilized CMOS sensor, and a 2.7-inch LCD display.

Casio Exilim EX-FC100 Digital Camera

At 30 frames-per-second, the EX-FS10 and EX-FC100 capture 6-megapixel images. They actually start capturing before the shutter release button is fully depressed so even if you’re a little slow on the trigger, you won’t miss the shot. The 1000 FPS video capture makes super slow motion video possible. The impressive high-speed performance is made possible by the new EXILIM Engine 4.0, which has two separate processors – a standard CPU and a dedicated high-speed image processor. The new processing engine also enables improved auto focus tracking and the new Dynamic Photo function, which creates a composite moving image by combining multiple images on a still background. Both cameras also offer 1280x720 HD video with 6-megapixel video still capture.

Casio also announced the 12.1-megapixel Exilim EX-Z400, 10.1-megapixel Exilim EX-Z270, the 10.1-megapixel Exilim EX-S5, and the 12.1-megapixel Exilim EX-S12. The six new cameras should be available in March. The Exilim EX-FS10 will retail for $349.99, the EX-FC100 for $399, the EX-Z400 will be $299.99, the EX-Z270 will be $229.99, the EX-S12 will sell for $249.99, and the EX-S5 will have an MSRP of $179.99. All of the new cameras are offered in multiple colors. For more information and complete specs, please visit the Casio Web site.

Before buying either the JVC GY-HM100 / GY-HM700, you better be darn well married to Apple's Final Cut Pro. Said ProHD camcorders are the industry's first in the solid state line to store files in native QuickTime format onto SDHC cards. Apple's pushing the fact that users don't have to transcode or re-wrap prior to editing, and considering that each one cam can hold twin SDHC cards, you'll be able to capture a maximum of 64GB before needing to reload. And just think, this time next year the successor will hit with dual SDXC support, giving buyers a maximum capacity of 4TB. Decisions, decisions.

ViewSonic goes crazy with nine new digital photo frames

ViewSonic goes crazy with nine new digital photo frames

Talk about covering all of your bases. ViewSonic has unloaded a netbook, a 3D LCD and a 3D projector here at CES, but it has somehow found the time to also unload not one, not eight, but nine new digital photo frames. It's adding in the 7-inch VFM735-52M, 8-inch VFM835-52M and 10-inch VFM1035W-52M to its SwifTouch lineup for $129, $159 and $189, respectively, and it's also busting out a full line of 4:3 frames for those still deathly afraid of widescreen. Finally, it's previewing a pair of all-in-one frames with inbuilt alarm clocks and AM / FM radio, both of which are on track for a Q2 release at $99.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3 launches: world's first WiFi camera with web browser

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3 launches: world's first WiFi camera with web browser

No clue why Sony didn't unleash this pretty boy with its litany of items yesterday, but maybe it just saw fit to give it some special attention. Thanks to the all-admitting FCC, we already had a good idea that this was coming, but now that it's finally here, we're still pretty jazzed. Set to rival Panny's Lumix DMC-TZ50, the DLNA-certified Cyber-shot DSC-G3 is the planet's first WiFi camera with a built-in web browser, enabling users to upload images and video directly to popular sharing sites wherever a WiFi connection is available. Of note, the camera comes with complimentary access to Sony's Easy Upload Home Page via AT&T WiFi, which provides easy entrance into Shutterfly, Picasa, YouTube, Photobucket and Dailymotion. Other specs include a 10 megapixel sensor, 4x optical zoom and Face Detection. It's yours to grab right now for around $500.
