Samsung EX1 Digital Camera Review

Samsung EX1 Digital Camera Review

Samsung EX1 Digital Camera Review

Still remember the Samsung EX1 or also known as the Samsung TL500? PhotographyBLOG has a comprehensive review of this 10-megapixel compact digital camera. Aimed at serious photographers, the EX1 features a large 1/1.7-inch CCD sensor, a 3-inch swivelling AMOLED screen and a bright f/1.8 lens with a 3x focal range of 24-72mm. What’s more, the Samsung EX1 also supports RAW shooting mode, an ISO 80-3200, an external flash hotshoe, the Dual Image Stabilization technology and full manual control over exposure. Here is the verdict:

The Samsung EX1 promises to join the exclusive club of compact system cameras, with a lens adaptor and an external flash hotshoe that may or may not take an optical viewfinder, which really would be a great addition - only time will tell exactly what accessories Samsung will release for the EX1, a plan that worked very well for the Panasonic LX3. Until then the EX1 is a premium compact that delivers a premium user experience and photos, out-performing the admittedly 2-year old LX3 in most regards and joining the likes of the Canon Powershot G11 and S90, Ricoh GR Digital III and of course the LX3 as a great pocket camera for serious photographers.

Available in grey or black, the Samsung EX1/ TL500 is priced at £399 or around $449.

Samsung NX10 Review thumbnail

The catchily named 'mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras' are quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with, a fact that Samsung have recognised with the launch of their own rival system to the Micro Four Thirds standard. The Samsung NX10 is the first model in the new series, featuring a DSLR-like design, large 3 inch AMOLED screen, electronic viewfinder, 720p video and a large APS-C CMOS sensor with 14.6 megapixels. With 30mm pancake, 18-55mm and 50-200mm lenses and a smattering of accessories available from day one and five more lenses to follow this year, Samsung are certainly making a sizeable investment in their compact/DSLR hybrid system. Read our Samsung NX10 review, complete with 50 JPEG samples and 12 RAW, to find out if it can out-perform its Olympus and Panasonic rivals.

Samsung CL80: A Point-and-Shoot Crammed with 14 Megapixels, Wi-Fi and AMOLED Touchscreen

Samsung CL80: A Point-and-Shoot Crammed with 14 Megapixels, Wi-Fi and AMOLED Touchscreen

On paper, Samsung's CL80 point-and-shoot is a superfluous spec nerd wet dream: Built-in Wi-Fi, 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen, 14 (okay, noisy) megapixels and 720p video recording. Oh, and it might be the most serious (read: best) looking camera they've made yet.

You can send photos through email, or to Facebook, YouTube and Picasa over Wi-Fi, though it crushes the photos down to 2 megapixels. Same story with beaming them using Bluetooth 2.0: resolution's cut to 1024x768. Besides Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, it's got HDMI and DLNA support, so it should just work with other DLNA stuff.

A possibly interesting note is that Samsung says that the CL80 and its crummier brother, the TL240, are the first ever products made using hydro-forming, which supposedly 'allows for greater flexibility during the design process and gives manufacturers the ability to produce smoother silhouettes, seamless bonding, and higher quality surfaces.' Mmmmmhmmmm.

The Best Point and Shoot Cameras for Every Purpose

The Best Point and Shoot Cameras for Every Purpose

Mark Goldstein is the Editor of Photography Blog. And he's been so kind as provide us with his favorite point and shoot picks in every key category.

Best for lowlight

Canon PowerShot S90 ($400)

The camera of the moment, the popular PowerShot S90 is a small but perfectly formed compact for the keen photographer. Concentrating on image quality rather than simply joining in the megapixel race (just like Sony's TX1 / WX1 models), the S90 offers DSLR-like results in a pocketable device, making it the perfect second camera for any self-respecting DSLR owner. A sensible resolution of 10 megapixels and fast zoom lens make the S90 an excellent choice when the lighting drops. This is one camera that you carry everywhere and still achieve breath-taking photos that will look great on your wall. [Review]

Best bang for your buck

Samsung HZ15W ($250)

Samsung can always be relied upon to deliver more for less, and the HZ15W is certainly no different. The HZ15W can't quite match every feature that its main rivals offer, but it does cost a lot less than them. With an amazingly versatile 10x zoom lens, high-definition video and a wealth of beginner-friendly modes, this well-designed camera is simple to use yet offers enough features and quality to satisfy more experienced photographers. The HZ15W could well be the only camera that you ever need. [Review]

Best video/still crossover

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7 ($400)

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7 is not only one of the best video compacts on the market, it's also one of the best cameras full stop. Support for the AVCHD Lite format almost doubles the recording time, albeit at the expense of editing ease. The dedicated Record button, stereo microphone, wind cut function and audio sampling at 48kHz combine to make the TZ7 a star performer for moving images. It's also a fantastic stills camera too, with an incredibly versatile 12x zoom and top-notch image quality - a great do-it-all, carry-everywhere device. [Review]

Best super slim model

Sony TX1 ($300)

Sony has long ruled the roost in the 'it's so slim you can barely see it' category, and the desirable TX1 continues that tradition. Combining a sturdy yet stylish metal body, clever sliding front plate and impressive folded lens optics in a frame that's just 14.1mm thick, the TX1 still manages to pack in a 4x zoom lens and 3-inch touch-sensitive rear screen. You also get the added bonus of Sony's impressive 'Exmor R' back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, which greatly improves low-light performance. Available in a variety of attractive colors to match your personality, the TX1 is guaranteed to look as good as you. [Review]

Best wet and rugged

Pentax Optio W80 ($210)

Ed note: Brian Lam reviewed most every rugged camera under the sun last summer, and his favorite all around performer went to the Pentax W80, a Jack-of-all-trades rugged cam featuring a 5x internal zoom lens. Its picture quality doesn't compete with the best point and shoots, and the W80 can only be dropped from around 3 feet, but it can go underwater up to 16 feet and function in temperatures down to 14 degrees. [Review]

There are obviously a lot of other great cameras this year for every budget and level of experience. See all of Photography Blog's camera reviews here (http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/).

Samsung WB5000: hands-on with a 24x zoom featherweight

Samsung WB5000: hands-on with a 24x zoom featherweight

When not concerned with the futility of existence we know what has your mind preoccupied: just how manly is Samsung's WB5000? With a 24x optical zoom, full manual control option, ISO 6400 sensitivity, and RAW format support it's just gotta be a heaving mass of elongating gadget hedonism, right? Well, no... at least not physically. Granted, our nerdceps are tuned to negate the shutter recoil of Nikon's beastly D300 DSLR. But the WB5000 feels surprisingly light, hollow even. Now the weight of a super-zoom camera, in general, has nothing to do with image quality. But the size to weight ratio was surprising nonetheless, and a stark reminder that the WB5000 is nothing more than a massive 26mm Schneider-KREUZNACH lens with compact-camera quality components inside its chunky posterior. We'll reserve judgment until we, or someone else, can grab a unit for a full review. 'Till then, you know where to find more pics.

Samsung's ultraslim ST45 digital camera is sadly devoid of clowns

Samsung's ultraslim ST45 digital camera is sadly devoid of clowns

We'll be honest -- we were hoping that from now on Samsung would be including creepy clown displays on the front of all their 12.2 megapixel shooters. If for some strange reason you're not into that idea, however, the ST45 should be right up your alley. A pretty noteworthy 16mm thin, this guy features an ISO sensitivity up to 3200, a 2.7-inch LCD screen, and all the goodies you expect from Samsung: Smart Scene Recognition with 11 (count 'em!) picture settings (Portrait, Night portrait, Macro, etc.), Digital Image Stabilization, Self Portrait & Frame Guide (for all those double-chin masking MySpace one-handed self-pics), and the obligatory Face Detection. This bad boy will be available in the UK in red, black, blue, or grey, sometime late this month. PR after the break.
