Kodak's First Touchscreen Camera Shoots 720p, Goes By "Slice"

Kodak's First Touchscreen Camera Shoots 720p, Goes By "Slice"

Kodak's first wave of cameras basically embodied the commodity point-and-shoot: they were cheap, simple, and not particularly good. The Slice, their first touchscreen P&S, is their first attempt at something better.

The Slice is the only camera that stands out in Kodak's new P&S line, not just for its touchscreen, but for its price. $350 gets you 14MP still shots and 720p, 30fps video, optical image stabilization, a Lithium Ion battery, and facial recognition and tagging. It's a sleek little slice slab of phone, but honestly, touchscreen point-and-shoot isn't?

$350 isn't play money, and it edges dangerously close to high-end point-and-shoot territory, where it'd have to compete with the likes of the Canon S90, which seems like a pretty terrible idea. But with these kinds of cameras—that is, featureless rectangular prisms that are supposed to take pictures—the proof in in the pictures. [Kodak]

Kodak Playsport Rugged Pocket Cam: 1080p Under the Sea

Kodak Playsport Rugged Pocket Cam: 1080p Under the Sea

The Zi8 is one of the best pocket camcorders around, but maybe the biggest. The Playsport takes the Zi8's guts—including its 1080p video, 5MP still photo sensor—and crams them into a small, waterproof shell. And? It's cheaper.

Like the Zi8, the Playsport shoots 1080p video at 30fps, as well as 720p at 30 or 60fps. Video is stabilized—which works fairly well to reduce image shimmering in the Zi8—and displayed on a 2.0-inch LCD. Storage comes by way of SDHC, while power draws from a rechargable Li-Ion battery. Basically, it is the Zi8, except it's noticeably more compact, and it'll shoot video up to 10 feet underwater.

It's one of the first seriously rugged pocket cams on the market, but it won't be the last—as cellphone cameras and regular point-and-shoots start to take better video, dedicated pocket cams will have to do something special to justify their existence. Hence, the swimming. The Playsport will go on sale in April, for $150.

Kodak Zi8 impressions: surprising functionality, but it's still a pocket camcorder

Kodak Zi8 impressions: surprising functionality, but it's still a pocket camcorder

We've been messing around with Kodak's latest pocket camcorder, the Zi8, and find the shooter to be an interesting hybrid. With a flip-out USB plug, HDMI out and an easily accessible SD card slot, this is clearly a 'premium' mix of features for the class, but the $180 pricetag keeps the device firmly grounded in Walmart-friendly reality. Other odd perks like a line-in jack and 1080p have us scratching our heads -- but in a good way. Overall, we'd feel pretty comfortable saying the footage is about the best you can obtain at this pricepoint. Colors are great, the image stabilization isn't a gimmick (sorry, Flip), and if you squint hard enough you can almost believe the 1080p is 1080p. Still, the camera is hampered by its cheap approach to processing and compressing the footage it's taking in -- despite its limitations, we'd say the iPhone 3GS is besting most cheap pocket camcorders on this front, motion just looks much more fluid. But don't take our word for it, check out a couple of video samples after the break.

Kodak Easyshare Z950 digital camera

Kodak Easyshare Z950 digital camera

Kodak Easyshare Z950 digital camera

It makes us wonder whether camera companies do consult with one another as to when they ought to release their products, as Panasonic had a barrage of cameras earlier this week, followed by Kodak's offerings this time round. The Easyshare Z950 digital camera will be the latest addtition to the Z-Series family, where it will come with the following features :-

  • 12-megapixel sensor

  • 10X image stabilised Schneider-Kreuznach Variogon optical zoom lens

  • Smart Capture feature

  • Fast click-to-capture speed (<0.3 seconds)

Out later this September for £199.99 apiece, this looks set to be an ordinary, entry-level point-and-click shooter.

Kodak's 1080p Zi8 HD pocket camcorder in hand

Kodak's 1080p Zi8 HD pocket camcorder in hand

Yeah, you don't really need 1080p in a compact like this. You know it, we know it. Kodak probably knows it too. Still, it's always pretty wild to pick up a little piece like this and know it can shoot to a native resolution that our parents can't even pronounce. The new Zi8 is certainly bulky for a 'pocket' camcorder, but makes up for it by sporting a rechargeable battery, line-in audio jack, HDMI out, 2.5-inch LCD and even keeping the pop-out USB plug around for old times sake. The perks of face recognition for improved exposure and gyroscope-based image stabilization are also pretty snazzy at this $180 pricepoint. We still aren't quite sold on the way this camera (like most of these compacts) processes video -- it seems to do a lot of damage to frame-to-frame motion, something that Apple fought off pretty well with the iPhone 3GS -- but we're going to take one home and test it out a little before we throw down a verdict.

Kodak Zx1 unboxing and impressions

Kodak Zx1 unboxing and impressions

While videophiles might shudder to think it, Pure Digital's crappy Flip, the little YouTubecam that could, has changed a lot about how a lot of folks approach video capture -- $590 million worth of change, according to Cisco. Kodak jumped into the market last year with one of the earliest HD models, the $179 Zi6. Now they've followed up with the Zx1, a $149 'rugged' camera for, um, ruggedness. They're aiming the camera at outdoor types, but with a smaller form factor, better build, lower price, HDMI output, and 60fps 720p recording (the original maxes out at 30fps 720p), about the only thing you'll be missing from the Zi6 is a macro mode. So, specs aside, how does the Zx1 perform? Find out after the break.

We've gotten to spend some time with the camera, and while we appreciate the price, the size and the endless zoom, we're overall none too impressed. Check out our full impressions after the break.

Kodak introduces EasyShare Z915 with 10x zoomer

While a smattering of other camera outfits decided to out most of their new point-and-shoot models a few weeks prior to PMA, Kodak has kept with tradition by breaking their new kid out here in Vegas. The EasyShare Z915 is a markedly standard 10 megapixel shooter, boasting a 10x image stabilized optical zoom lens, the company's own Smart Capture feature to automatically snag the best shots, support for AA batteries, a 2.5-inch rear LCD and an SD / SDHC card slot. It'll be available in red, blue, black and gray this April for a completely respectable $199.95. Trouble is, you'll probably forget this thing even exists by then..

Kodak delivers Z980 24x megazoom, M380 point-and-shoot cameras

PMA may be but a few months off, but that's not stopping Kodak from dropping a few show-stoppers here at CES. Up first is the Z980 megazoom ($399.95; Spring 2009 availability), which offers up a 26-millimeter wide angle lens with a mind-boggling 24x image stabilized optical zoom. You'll also find a 12-megapixel sensor, a vertical shutter release, HD video capture and a detachable vertical grip. On deck is the March-bound EasyShare M380 point-and-shoot ($179), a 10-megapixeler with a 5x optical zoom, 2.7-inch LCD monitor and your choice of black, red, or teal color schemes. Kodak's rugged Zx1 handheld camcorder does 720p in the jungle

Kodak's rugged Zx1 handheld camcorder does 720p in the jungle

Kodak's 720p Zi6 has only been out for six months, but already we're seeing what's likely its beefed-up predecessor. The mighty Zx1 is debuting here at CES, and with it comes a 2-inch LCD monitor, easy upload to YouTube, 720p HD video capture at 60fps, an IP43-certified weather-resistant design and an SD / SDHC card slot that can understand media up to 32GB in size. All told, users can capture up to ten hours of high-def video, and the bundled HDMI cable makes showing off recent grabs as easy as pie. The Zx1 will arrive in five colors (pink, blue, yellow, red and black) and will include pre-charged AA Ni-MH rechargeable batteries alongside a charger. We'll bet Creative and Pure Digital have a little something of their own to show off before this one lands in April for $149.95. Full release is (where else?) after the break.

Kodak intros the C913, M1073 IS and M1063 cheapcams

We're not certain why Kodak is trickling out these middle-of-the-road digicams instead of announcing them all at once, but here we are. Joining the M1093 IS are the new M1073 IS (pictured) and M1063, while the C813 get a new friend in the C913. As you'd expect, almost nothing about these is all that spectacular: the $179 M1063 and M1073 IS are both 10 megapixel units with ISO1000 sensitivity and face detection, while the $120 C913 is a 9.2 megapixel unit with a 2.4-inch display and digital image stabilization. Expect to see these all in October, and check out the C913 after the break.
