Shiny at IFA 2008: Rollei X-8 Sports is the Chuck Norris of cameras

rollei-x8-sports-thumb-300x207.jpg

Duncan Geere writes... No, actually, it's not. Because nothing could possibly be as rugged than Chuck Norris. What it does rival is the Ricoh G600. When I say 'rival' though, I actually mean 'spec slightly worse in every category'. There isn't any price yet, though, so maybe that's where it can win out. The Rollei X-8 Sports is lightweight (158g), resistant to moisture, dirt and cold, waterproof to 10m, and can take a 1m drop. So it's pretty hardcore. It's reasonably-specced too. 8megapixel, 3x optical zoom, and up to 1600 ISO, along with a whole host of shooting presets.

Olympus' new trio touts 10 megapixel Stylus 1050 SW with motion sensitive Tap Control

Olympus' new trio touts 10 megapixel Stylus 1050 SW with motion sensitive Tap Control

When pumping out unimpressive point-and-shoot cameras, one sure-fire way to grab some attention is to innovate around the UI. That seems to be Olympus' approach with its new semi-rugged, Stylus 1050 SW ($300) pictured above. Able to withstand drops from 5-feet (1.5-meters), temps as low as 14 degrees F (-10 C), and submersion to 10-feet (3-meters), the new 10.1-megapixel shooter with 3x zoom and 2.7-inch display also packs an accelerometer for Olympus' new motion-driven 'Tap Control' -- tap twice on the back, top or sides with your bulky, gloved hand to switch the camera into different modes. Pretty smart, actually... let's hope it takes quality images too. Of less interest is the skinny new 16.5-mm Stylus 1040 ($200) offering all of the 1050's guts without the Tap Control and weatherproofing. Last up is the Olympus SP-565 UZ ($400). It bungs the 10 megapixel sensor and 20x zoom from Olympus' SP-570 UZ into the 8 megapixel, 18x SP-560 UZ introduced this time last year. All three cams due in October. See the 1040 and SP-565 UZ after the break.

Samsung New YouTube Friendly Camcorder

Samsung New YouTube Friendly Camcorder

Samsung SC MX20 Camcorder

Samsung has recently unveiled a powerful compact digital camcorder, the MX20. The new MX20 is the first to apply H.264 CODEC to SD camcorders. Compared to SD camcorders using MPEG-2, the MX20’s H.264 enhances video quality and recording times significantly. With the codec’s double compression rate, you get to email or share video files on the internet faster due to smaller size, without sacrificing video quality. The MX20 features a powerful Schneider lens with 34x optical zoom and Samsung’s improved Hyper Digital Image Stabilization, which compensates for the images caused by hand-shaking for sharper footage and a memory card slot for SD/SDHC and MMC+ (up to 32GB) cards. All these functions are accessible through an advanced 2.7 inch screen LCD which helps users frame their subjects and review footage even under strong sunlight. It’s a perfect companion for camcorder junkies who also frequently share their footage on iPod and YouTube. The Samsung MX20, offered in black, white, red and blue will be available in September. Price is TBD.

Canon EOS 50D briefly appears on Canon's Chinese site

Canon EOS 50D briefly appears on Canon's Chinese siteWe'd take all these rumors with a huge grain of salt given how much chatter there is ahead of Photokina, but Canon's Chinese site briefly posted an official page for an EOS 50D this afternoon. It's down now, but the listed specs are pretty solid: 15.1 megapixel sensor with a 1.6x crop and ISO 12800 sensitivity through a DIGIC 4 processor, dust reduction, VGA-res 3-inch LCD, and built-in image stabilization -- which is a little odd given Canon's great line of IS lenses. Google still has the page cached if you want to take a look -- it's thrilling, trust us.

PS.- As usual, this image has been floating around forever, so it's probably a mockup.

It is excellent point and shoot camera with long zoom range, but if you already have 1010, there might not be enough motivation to purchase 1060 as a replacement. 1060 has several colors to choose from, like Starry Silver, Midnight Black, Cyan Green and Pink. The Mju 1060 will be available in Asia from end August, but pricing is TBD.

Olympus trots out 8-megapixel FE-360 and FE-370 digital cameras

Look out, world -- we're not so certain you're ready to behold the greatness of Olympus' latest duo. In all seriousness, we're not so certain you'll be able to stay awake as we explain the details, but stay up and you just may run across something you're into. The FE-360 and FE-370 point-and-shoots each include an 8-megapixel sensor, face detection, image stabilization, a video mode and an xD card slot. There's also a bundled attachment that enables the use of microSD cards, but we're assuming the all-but-forgotten xD slot is kept in there to stroke a suit's ego somewhere up the chain. Anywho, the two differ in the optical zoom category (3x on the FE-360, 5x on the FE-370) and LCD size (2.5-inches versus 2.7-inches). Each shooter will arrive in a variety of hues and will hit the UK market for £129.99 ($242) / £179.99 ($334) next month.

Canon's EOS Rebel XS / 1000D DSLR hits the test bench

Canon's EOS Rebel XS / 1000D DSLR hits the test bench

With all the DSLR noise going on, the EOS Rebel XS managed to sneak in without too many people noticing. The proper entry-level replacement to the XTi / 400D recently took the time to cave to Camera Labs' every request, and when all was said and done, critics didn't find too many negative points to harp on. The all-important image quality ranked very highly, and the built-in live view was obviously a boon. Granted, the fixed screen and 7-point AF system (versus the 9-pointer on the XTi) were slight bummers, but it still managed to secure an 82% (Highly Recommended) rating. Care to see how it stacked up against Nikon's D60, Sony's A200 and a Polaroid 80B Highlander? Two of the three comparisons await you in the read link.

Pentax Optio W60 waterproof camera gets reviewed

Pentax Optio W60 waterproof camera gets reviewed

When it comes to choosing a waterproof digital camera, there's obviously one feature that matters above all others and, according to Trusted Reviews, Pentax's Optio W60 passes that test without any difficulty. What's more, it's also apparently reasonably rugged, and it takes some decent pictures for good measure. While you can expect the usual noise problems at the highest ISO settings (including a nearly useless ISO 6400), the W60 looks to actually perform decent enough up to ISO 800, which is more than you can say for some cameras. On the downside, the site found that the camera suffered from some 'particularly bad barrel distortion' at wide angle settings, and it proved to be a bit more sluggish than the norm, which appears to be at least partly due to the camera's autofocus system. Still, if resistance to the elements is your top priority, it looks like this one will get the job done.

The $189.99 J110w steps down to a 2.7-inch LCD, while the J100 comes in at $179.99 with a few less extras. The J15 ($139.99) gets doused in black or silver and includes an 8.2-megapixel sensor and 3x optical zoom; there's a J12 slipped in there as well, though it was already available in the Great North. Who knows when Fujifilm plans on making these official and releasing them worldwide, but considering the specs, we know you won't lose too much sleep worrying over it.

FujiFilm FinePix Z200fd gets stateside release and price, couples beware

FujiFilm Finepic Z200

The 10-megapixel, 1/2.3-inch CCD, 5x image stabilized optical-zoom lensed FinePix Z200fd is finally coming to the states in September for a price of $299.95. Fuji has kept all the consumer-friendly features like dual image stabilization, dual shot mode, and a novel group timer mode that only takes the picture once it sees four faces in the frame. For you budding journos, a potentially handy blog mode automatically resizes images to 640x480 for all your important updates. And let's not forget about the couple timer, which waits to take a shot until the lovebirds are deemed close enough.

Pentax Optio E60's 10 megapixels are easy on the wallet

Pentax Optio E60's 10 megapixels are easy on the wallet

In strict megapixel to dollar terms, the new Optio E60 from Pentax is a real steal, at a mere $140 for its absurd 10 megapixels. Of course, there's more to the story. The 3x zoom and lack of optical image stabilization -- 'High Sensitivity Digital Shake Reduction' is little comfort -- won't be winning you any 'best candid shot of whatever we did last night' awards, but there are some decent automatic perks like face recognition and a 'Green' settings mode for absolute novices that should keep you from getting booted out of your Flickr pool. The E60, which is powered by AA batteries, will be available in October.

Olympus' 10MP EVOLT E-520 DSLR gets reviewed

Olympus' 10MP EVOLT E-520 DSLR gets reviewed

Although we were able to take an all-too-brief peek at Olympus' EVOLT E-520 late last month, the results weren't exactly indicative of what this thing is capable of -- you know, considering the unit in question was defective. The cats over at PhotographyBLOG managed to secure a fully functional unit, and results were much, much improved. Although reviewers didn't go quite so far as to call it the perfect camera, it sure came close in their eyes. Aside from the depressingly small viewfinder and the low quantity of AF sensors, critics found the unit quite hard to bash. Overall, it managed to snag a stellar 4.5 out of 5 rating, and better still, it was said to be just the thing for 'beginners and enthusiasts alike.' Taking Olympus more seriously in your search for a suitable DSLR just might be in order.

Pentax rolls out another yawner: the 10MP M60 point-and-shoot

Pentax rolls out another yawner: the 10MP M60 point-and-shoot

If the E60 had you dozing last night, you'll be conked out in no time by the time you finish reading this. Pentax is at it again, proving that point-and-shoot cameras can still be boring this day and age. The M60 tries to be fancy with a 10-megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom, 2.5-inch LCD monitor, 'approximately 36.5MB of built-in memory,' movie / panorama modes, a variety of scene modes and smile detection capabilities to boot. Expect this one to arrive late next month in blue, pink and silver for around £90 ($179).

Nikon D700 full-frame DSLR gets unboxed on video

Nikon D700 full-frame DSLR gets unboxed on video

It's easy enough to drool over the press shots of Nikon's luscious D700. Seeing someone unbox this full-frame beast on video is another experience entirely (bordering on spiritual, really). Unfortunately, the vid waiting after the break is just two minutes long and doesn't show any clicks being depressed, but those looking to get a better idea of the size and build have plenty of reason to click through.
