Yep, the White Stripes are once more reaching out to the retro lovin', geeked-out crowd by offering up a set of 'all-plastic,' limited edition Lomography cameras. Notably, the JACK Holga Starter Kit includes 'an additional Fisheye lens, three filter set and a custom Peppermint lens filter,' while MEG's version comes with the 'Nobody Knows How To Talk To Children' ringflash and a custom Peppermint Film Mask filter. Canon's EOS-1D Mark III DSLR gets reviewed

Canon's EOS-1D Mark III DSLR gets reviewed

Although Canon's powerful EOS-1D Mark III has priced itself right out of consideration for a large sect, the niche that has been waiting in tense anticipation to see a solid review of the unit need wait no more. The folks over at Digital Camera Info were able to put the beastly DSLR through a gauntlet of tests, and while it did end up shining gloriously in the bulk of them, one persistent problem seemed to mar the otherwise flawless camera. As expected, the design, speed, live LCD, color accuracy, noise / low light performance and controls were all highly praised, but the white balance and a nagging autofocus problem did prove troublesome. Granted, the reviewers did state that a firmware fix seemed to solve the issue, but it was apparently so aggravating that patient folks (who?) may want to consider holding off until things get ironed out. Nevertheless, the unit was still regarded as a fantastic DSLR, and if you've got five grand just burning a hole in your pocket, why not take some time out and read the full review before taking the plunge?

Samsung's NV20 point-and-shoot gets reviewed

Samsung's NV20 may have taken on a slightly different look compared to most of its competitors, but the feature set is still mighty impressive on paper. For those who've been on the fence, PhotographyBLOG managed to spend some quality time with the shooter, but reviewers didn't exactly fall in love. It was stated that the new sensor in the NV20 actually 'made the image quality worse [than that of the NV10],' and while one may have hoped for big changes, this one 'didn't improve on the previous generation of NV cameras.' The actual interface, however, was given loads of praise, but as we all know, it's the results that really matter. In the end, the device was awarded 3.5 out of 5 stars, but it was unfortunately dubbed a shining example of 'style over substance.'

Review: Panasonic Lumix FX55 — Anything But Illuminated

Review: Panasonic Lumix FX55 — Anything But Illuminated: "

Wired_lumixfx55_camera_1

Built around a lens forged in the vaunted house of Leica, the FX55 is packed with a laundry list of features: an ultra wide zoom with twin mode optical image stabilization, three aspect ratios, and a three-inch LCD. Sweet specs, right? Yup, they are. This palm-sized, lustrously silver shooter holds so much promise that when we actually used it in the wild, the results were a tad shocking. You see, an impressive resume of features and gorgeous form factor doesn’t necessarily translate into a great shooter. I spent 10 days futzing with the FX55 at family gatherings, school functions, petting zoos, and a very fancy wedding searching for the ‘intuitive’ part of the user experience. You know what? There isn’t one. The enormous LCD showcases jerky motion and some very confusing menus. And picture quality? We’ve seen smaller cameras (like the ELPH) do it a lot better.' —Jackson Lynch

WIRED Beautiful industrial design with superior Leica optics. Shoots in 3:2, 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios. Sharp QuickTime videos.

TIRED Menus are unnecessarily murky. Key functions like exposure compensation, flash adjustment, and delete require deep menu digging rather than direct access. The function dial makes mode changes slower than a tortoise full of rigor mortis.

Canon's PowerShot G9 gets reviewed

Those upset with Canon over its exclusion of RAW in the PowerShot G7 will find their biggest gripe squashed in the G9, and just in case you're interested in seeing how this uniquely designed amateur cam held up to critiques, here's the skinny. Reviewers were understandably elated to be able to capture shots in RAW and tweak till their hearts were content, but also noteworthy were the excellent results found by simply switching to Auto mode and taking a load off. It was suggested that this camera 'not only makes you feel like a better photographer, but helps you become one too,' referring to the wealth of functions that catered to both beginners and seasoned veterans alike. Unfortunately, there seemed to be a noticeable amount of noise when the ISO exceeded 400, and while it was built for abuse, you should know that it was deemed 'one of weightiest, most brick-like compacts out there.' Overall, the G9 was dubbed hard to beat, and if you're scouting a solid DSLR backup, you should certainly give the read link a bit of your attention.

Sony's Cyber-shot T200 gets its first review

Sony's Cyber-shot T200 gets its first review: "

You may remember Sony's new Cyber-shot T200 from way back at IFA, where we had the great and terrible pleasure of getting our grubby mitts all over it. Well, CNET Asia has gotten their mitts on the device for a thorough review, and we thought we'd bring you the many, many highlights. Overall, they seem to like the design, but aren't crazy about the loss of some buttons, which they say makes the camera feel a little cramped, though the large, 3.5-inch touchscreen display makes up for it. The camera's smile detection -- which is one of its more novel features -- is reported to be inaccurate and touchy, and the speed of startup and first shot on the T200 apparently leaves something to be desired. CNET says that the camera's image quality is 'decent,' but that they detected noise at ISO 400, and anything past ISO 800 was a nasty mess. Overall, they're not in love, but they do seem to be feeling a strong 'like.' Browse on over and catch the whole review.

One of the biggest new features over last year’s model is the OIS, which proved very effective. Also, the increased resolution on the sensor also made the image much more crisp in bright light.

CamcorderInfo’s review of the JVC GZ-MG155 didn’t seem to go all that well. Much of it can be summed up right in their opening paragraph:

Outclassed by the step-up GZ-MG255 and outperformed in low light by the step-down GZ-MG130, this camcorder shows what happens when a company spends more time pursuing the ‘megapixel count game’ and less time looking at the effects of those actions.

GE rolls out pink and black H855 digital cameras: "

GE hasn't exactly impressed us (or others) with its digital cameras in the past, but it looks those taking a chance on the company's new H855 model will at least be supporting a good cause in the process, as a portion of the proceeds from each camera will be donated to the Susan G. Komen breast cancer foundation. From the looks of it, the cameras also look to be somewhat of an improvement over previous models, with them boasting a full 8 megapixels, a 5x optical zoom, a 3-inch LCD screen, and a 28-mm equivalent wide-angle lens. Unlike some other similarly charitable-minded products, you apparently won't have to buy the pink version to see your money put to good use, with a black model also available for those that prefer to keep things a little more discreet. You will, however, have to buy them from the Home Shopping Network, which has these exclusive starting October 20th. No word on a price just yet though.

Review: Sony NSC-GC1 Net-Sharing Cam — The Net Result is "Meh"

Review: Sony NSC-GC1 Net-Sharing Cam — The Net Result is "Meh": "

Nsc_gc1_1
Stylistically, Sony's new YouTube-capable camcorder treads a bizarre line between CVS disposable and bitchin' retro-hip. Chunky, black, and monolithic, it's nothing if not unusual. But even if the design suits your fancy, the NSC-GC1's overall performance will inevitably drop the ball. Ergonomically, we just couldn't get used to the unabashed rectangular block and it's tiny, strangely placed buttons. The itsy-bitsy joystick is especially frustrating — its vague feel and cheap construction makes' 'navigating the equally-clunky menus a chore. Video quality is decent at best (VGA and QVGA resolutions only). The 5mp still camera is a nice addition to a pocket camcorder like this, but with a shaky digital zoom and mediocre lens, we just can't justify parting ways with two hundred smackers to own one.' —Roger Thomasson

WIRED YouTube software is loaded on camera for use on any computer. Flip-out, rotatating screen makes it easier to shoot odd angles. Picture Motion Browser software is friendly, but not all that quicker or easier than YouTube's own uploading mechanism. Sports on screen histogram and an assortment of manual-esque controls.

TIRED Design flaw: it's far to easy to unintentionally obscure the flash with fingers. Video quality isn't great. Odd, clunky design. Wholly non-intuituve interface and small, pokey buttons. Glossy black finish is a streak-magnet. No internal memory! Memory Stick Duo purchase is mandatory ($35 at sony.com). Lousy internal mic (with no line in or mic jack) makes for lousy audio.' '

HP has issued a refresh to the Photosmart M line with the new M547. The upgrade purports to improve on the already solid M537, but we're seeing more in the way of tradeoffs than enhancements. While the M547 does offer a slight bump in megapixels--from 6.0 to 6.2--and supports larger-capacity SDHC flash cards, buyers will have to compromise with a smaller 2.4-inch screen and some degradation in picture quality.

Canon's 12-megapixel SD950 IS review roundup

Canon's 12-megapixel SD950 IS review roundup: "

You've had a moment to ponder over that SD870 purchase, so how's about yet another option, cool? On the docket today is Canon's SD950 IS (IXUS 960 IS elsewhere in the world), which packs an awful lot of megapixels into a pocket-friendly shell. As expected from Canon's SD lineup, this one fared pretty well throughout, garnering praise for its sleek design, superb image quality, effective optical image stabilization / face detection and sturdy feel. The only real knocks came from the less-than-perfect noise performance, slower than expected startup / image capture and the admittedly lofty pricetag. Granted, this one should be close to ideal for poster printers needing a camera minuscule enough to reside in a rear pocket, but for the rest of us, one of Canon's 'lower' models should fit the bill (and our budgets) a bit better.
